Friends of The Priory

Friends of Bridlington Priory

Bridlington Priory was founded around 1113 as an Augustinian monastery. Over the centuries, the Priory has known good and bad times – as a wealthy pilgrimage centre in the middle ages, as a semi-ruin when Henry VIII destroyed the monastery, as a flourishing parish church after Victorian restoration. Since medieval times, worship has been enhanced by an unbroken musical tradition which continues to this day with our traditional robed choir and world famous organ.

But whatever funds may have been there in the past to support its daily life, now in the 21st century keeping it going is up to us – congregation, community and friends- with no help from outside, Church or State. However careful we are, that cost works out at over £400 a day – a daunting figure for our congregation to bear on its own.

By becoming a ‘Friend of Bridlington Priory’, you will support us financially and help ensure that this living example of our nation’s heritage has a viable future, where our mission of spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ will continue for generations to come.

May God bless you now and always.

Aims

The Friends of Bridlington Priory aim to ensure that:

  • The Priory will still be there in the future for those important times in our lives – baptism, weddings and funerals;
  • The Priory will continue to be a focus for services, ceremonies and celebrations for the whole Bridlington community;
  • We, the present custodians, can successfully play our part in leaving the Priory in good condition for generations to come;
  • By helping with expensive running costs such as heating bills and insurance premiums, the Priory will not become a damp, neglected ruin.
