Organ recital: La Nativité du Seigneur by Olivier Messiaen, played on the Priory organ by James Thomas.
Nine extraordinary meditations in music, considered one of the most important organ works of the twentieth century. Written before his 30th birthday, La Nativité du Seigneur (The Birth of the Saviour) helped establish Messiaen as a composer of international importance.
A testament to Messiaen’s devout Christian faith, each movement follows a portion of the Christmas story. Significantly, the work contains early examples of Messiaen’s signature compositional elements, such as birdsong, rhythmic inspiration from Hindu talas and the free metre of plainsong.
The nine movements comment on the Christmas story and evoke grace, beauty, radiance, exhilaration, and majesty.
